Ten kingdoms have grown rich and comfortable beneath it. The old powers have gone quietly out of the world, and the horrors of the First Age are stories told beside dying fires.
Only one house still takes them seriously.
In the mountains of the Greyhills, the line of Arkanyor has kept a door—not a border, not a treasure, but a door—in the cold heart of the world, behind which something was bound in an age nobody now remembers.
Fifteen hundred years of sons sent to a cold city. Fifteen hundred years of dying on a wall for a duty no one thanks them for.
Aereth Arkanyor is sixteen, and heir to that watch.
